UPDATE ON DARREN

An update from the post I did on Darren, a homeless man with such a kind heart walking around East London with his dog Autumn creating these amazing one off copper pieces. I was so lucky to have him make me the copper bracelet above, together with lots of small copper flowers as decoration which belong to his signature creations. To catch up on the story from the beginning if you missed out, please have a look here.

First of all, thanks to everyone who shares an interest in this project - if we have any chance of changing the world, taking part in our local environment and seeing how we can make a difference is there is always a good step. All of your comments and support has made me realize how possible it is for us to speak the voice of difference and for it to actually manifest into change.

Since meeting Darren, I've been incredibly keen to start this project with him, making his amazing one-off's available to buy online and for him to slowly get on his feet again. After he made me this bracelet, I gave him my name and number for him to call me on his very dated Nokia phone which he couldn't remember the number to. I reckon he must have lost it the first time, but when I weeks after found him again, with the message of all your lovely responses and your interests in supporting him, it was incredible to see how touched and happy he was. Once again I gave him my number, this time on a used paper cup.

I haven't seen him since and I think the number has been lost, or most likely that he can't afford the credit to contact me. I'm on the search yet again, and next time I find him I will make sure to act quickly as I know he is just as keen for this to happen as I am to get involved.

Darren is just one of many, many homeless, who often end up sleeping on the street. I've been collecting clothes to give to another East London homeless, Isa, and I thought, if any of you have unused clothes, blankets etc. which you no longer have use of, and you know someone in your local area could put to good use with the cold months ahead, I know it would be greatly appreciated.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL BEING SO LOVELY AND SUPPORTIVE
X

  6. Thanks for sharing, Sarah! It's really sad hearing about Darren's story... especially with the cold winter months coming up.
Thank you for using your blog to bring attention to the REAL world, beyond fancy clothes and fashion. I definitely understand that it may be too taxing for him to take on such a big project, like starting an e-commerce jewelry business... and for someone like me who doesnt even live in London, I don't know how else I could help. I guess it's just a good reminder for me to look into my own neighborhood and see how I can make a difference for the people around me. I hope this post inspires everyone else to do the same!
