FEVER TO THE FORM

Something about you.

SOCIAL ALLURE

After one too many coffees, I'm ready to share. With social media trying to persuade that our waists should be smaller, our lips bigger and we should still be careless enough to go through 5 pizzas #newyearoldme - past its obvious initial allure, is anyone else exhausted right now? I feel like there's a general wave going through social media right now, with our personas having been so carefully curated for years, and for so long has had us double-taking ourselves and the value of our work IRL, now there seems to be an air of 'so be it'. Frankly, it's the most refreshing thing that's happened to this medium in my opinion.

Blogging and social media originally started out with an act of simply sharing, and everyone who was attracted to what you personally shared, could join and follow. Duh, Sarah.. Well, here's how it's changed: now, we've been around for long enough to know what gets likes. It's not just an act of sharing a personal preference anymore, it's a carefully curated act that aims to cater to the audience and not the idea itself. Whilst there is nothing wrong with either, the personal creativity and input of new ideas does however struggle with the second, and an algorithm may just have given it another punch. It's not a black and white subject (nothing artistic ever is), and we should be free to do exactly what we want there, be it led by a personal passion, a commercial collaboration or something that attracts attention purely for the sake of it - but let's remember to tap into where our authentic value is. The quality of the idea and not least the quality of individual expression.

Ilove a good rant about social media and blogging, and my whole point with this is only that social media is social media. Again Sarah, duh! But a like comes down to a double tap on a phone width image, undoubtedly the most sported thumb move of our century, and can per definition not define your creative and certainly not your personal worth. I made a decision a couple of years ago, and I've never strayed away from it: I base my opinion solely on myself and only the people I respect and value, who I trust have my best interest at heart, will I take critique from. It's truly liberating and not least a kung-fu kick to self-worth problems.

  2. That's a stunning coat! And I completely agree with you about social media and I'm really happy about the way you said things because you were polite and respectful unlike others who go on a rude and disrespectful rant about the same subject (just so that they can get views and likes which isn't that what they were saying they hated?) but anyway, I couldn't agree more.

  4. Amen. I struggle horribly with social media, I feel almost too old to keep up with it. I agonize over what I create and share and then it faithfully loses all relevancy just a few hours later, drowned out by the infinite every rolling feed of images for us to 'double tap' on. It torments me in so many ways and then every so often, a wave of hate will come my way. I am clueless when it comes to instagram, the only solid knowledge I have is that everyone including people's pets have more followers than I do. But at almost 30, I simply don't care because how can we care so much about an app that is so so little in the grand game that is LIFE? OMG I MUST LIVE MY LIFE AND STOP OBSESSING ABOUT INSTAGRAM.

okay this comment is long winded and weird but just know babe i read every post and every whim of yours on instagram i take to heart and save in my secret saved file on instagram because you are a genius to me.

  5. Your thoughts here are so insightful - You are so right, social media is easy to get lost in but I think the key to the whole scenario is to the true to yourself because that is what will stand out against the noise and you've got that down!

  6. It is true what's going on right now on social media but also about the fact that people start doing this follow/unfollow game which is insanely childish and annoying.

  7. You look beautiful! I love this post. Especially in the blogging industry, social media is crucial. But it can TOTALLY get to the point where it's super high pressure and just not fun anymore! I love your insight. It's important to remember what (and who!) truly matters. <3

  10. Thank you for this article! I can't agree more. I hate all the "rules" about what we should post to social media or what we should blog about. If we all followed these recommendations, there would be only two types of articles: How to blabla, or 3 things you should blabla. Because, you know, each article must be super useful, even though all just started to be the same. I see blogging and social media as a new age art, if we stay true and authentic. And there are no rules and limits for art.
    Your photos look so dreamy!
